Lisa Steffens received a classical education in drawing and painting at the New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in Greenwich Village. She graduated with an MFA in painting and has recently received certification as an Art Teacher from New York State. She teaches the Fundamentals of Painting and Drawing at Westchester Community College and has taught in private studios and in independent and public schools. Her work is in private collections in the US, Great Britain and the Netherlands and she exhibits extensively throughout the Hudson River Valley.
I have used
Convent of the Sacred Heart as the main subject matter and springboard for many of the paintings within this exhibition. I spent one extraordinary
trimester within the old walls of the school as a leave replacement art teacher, and found the teachers, staff, and students,
to be as remarkable as the place itself. So when I was asked to do a residency and to exhibit my work, I decided to paint
a number of pictures expressly for the exhibition that evoked the feeling of school life at Sacred Heart. In certain pieces, I have attempted to conjure up the nostalgia of being of that age and stage of life, in others, I have chosen to impart the special serenity that I discovered there, a serenity, with an underlying strength of purpose, faith, and compassion.
